The article discusses the main theories, concepts and views regarding the phenomenon of the image of the future as a product of mental reflection of reality, which is based on the sensoryperceptual level, the level of representations and the verbal-logical level. Models of the image of the future in western and domestic traditions are considered; an author’s model of the image of the future of modern youth was developed and presented, which includes cognitive, emotional and behavioral components. Cognitive is represented by the spatiotemporal characteristics of the image of the future; the emotional component contains the features of the experience associated with the image of the future and the subjective assessment of one’s life. The behavioral component is life plan construction, time management and the locus model of the design of the future. The concept of uncertainty as a characteristic of objective reality that affects the construction of the image of the future is considered. The main concepts and views on uncertainty and the situation of uncertainty are analyzed as a shortage or overabundance of information that creates a high degree of risk in making a decision that may affect the future of the subject. An empirical study was conducted on the basis of universities in Donetsk, Donetsk People’s Republic and Simferopol, Republic of Crimea, as a result of which the features of perception of the image of the future by students of these universities were revealed, taking into account their subjective understanding of uncertainty.

Keywords: image of the future, tolerance to uncertainty, situation of uncertainty, control, shortage/overabundance of information
